Preble County Park District Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer at the Nature Center

We are always seeking volunteers to help at the Garber Nature Center. Would one of these projects interest you?

  • Gate Closer
This is on-going throughout the spring, summer, and fall. We are looking for someone or multiple persons who could close our gate in the evening around dusk and open it in the morning by 8am.
  • Trail Maintenance
This is on-going throughout the spring, summer, and fall. It consists of removing branches in the trail, mowing the trail, and generally keeping it clear for walking.
  • Invasives Removal
This is on-going and targets bush honeysuckle, autumn-olive, garlic mustard and others, as the need arises. We’ll hold a training session if there is enough interest.
  • Garden Restoration
Have a green thumb? Now that the exterior is finished on the Garber homestead, it’s time to start landscaping. We would like to restore the old lilacs and grape arbor as well as create a peaceful place to sit and observe nature. You can adopt a specific garden bed or take on a specific project. We have plants to relocate, shrubs and plants to trim, etc. You can even draw up the plans for one of our garden beds.
  • Archive Press Releases
We have saved our press releases over the last 5 years and need to have them copied onto archival paper and organized or filed. This can be ongoing.
  • Prepare/Maintain Library of Useful Information
Also over the years we have received magazines, brochures, sales ads, etc. for nature and park related items. We have a start at getting these organized, but need someone to sort through them, get them organized, and filed so they are useful.
  • Library of Nature Reference Information
Our Program Director has been collecting various reference brochures and booklets. These need to be cataloged and organized in some fashion so we know what we have and can retrieve something in a timely manner.
  • Wallpaper Archive
The Garber homestead, being of Victorian nature, had wallpaper on the walls and ceilings of many of the rooms. The wallpaper changed over the years and we have fragile samples of many different wallpaper designs. It would be nice to have the samples transferred to archival paper and categorized in some way.
  • Luminaria Assistance
We have several volunteer opportunities for this event. Nov. 5 at 9:00am, we will be cutting and filling the luminaria containers. If you come to that bring a box cutter. On Dec. 3, late afternoon, we need help with setting up the luminaria along the boardwalk and throughout the forest. During the event we alsoneed help walking the luminaria path to check the lights and in the Garber farmhouse with the music and refreshments.

You will be able to work at your convenience; we will supply the materials. Contact the park administrator for more information.

If you are interested in volunteering for any of these projects, or have another suggestion, please contact us at admin@preblecountyparkdistrict.org or leave a message at 937-962-5561.
